Above: Smell the paint! 'Ex works' 50042 Triumph in September 2006. The
loco was still 'work in progress' and as can be seen, minus items such as
wipers!
She carried the number and original
name from 50006 'Neptune' for the weekend.
OPERATIONAL
Delivered into service October 1968 as D442 from English Electrics Vulcan Foundry (works no EE3812/D1183)
Renumbered to 50042 in December1973
Named TRIUMPH in October 1978
Transferred to Laira November 1980
Refurbished at Doncaster from 6 January to 22 May 1982 (33rd loco to be done)
Final overhaul January 1986 at Doncaster
Withdrawn from service 15 October 1990 from DCWA pool.
Arrived at Bodmin 10 March 1992
50042 was purchased by the Bodmin & Wenford Diesel Group in November 1991, from Laira depot in Plymouth, where it had languished since being withdrawn in October 1990. It arrived at Bodmin on 10 March 1992 behind 37671, having been hauled from Laira to Lostwithiel by 37673.
Restoration to get the loco running consisted of the replacement of stolen traction and ETH cables, freeing up the seized power unit and turbo chargers, and restoring the wrecked cabs. The engine was started for the first time on 12 Aug 1992, and moved under its own power on 25 Nov 1992. Since then, major work has included changing the ETH generator, and changing a traction motor. Recent work has seen the rusty cabsides replaced, and new roof panels made and fitted.
TRIUMPH is used regularly on the steep gradients at Bodmin, and is able to be used on full power when suitable loads are provided, usually at gala weekends. It is available for driver experience courses at various off peak times of the year (as are all our locos including the DMU).
